Only two people were in a position to experience all the events leading up to the first flight of a viable airplane, and here in three short essays they report how it came about. The idea of powered flight was so new that there were not even accepted methods of measuring the forces at play on a machine in-flight. The Wright brothers had to develop their own testing methods and conduct experimentation before they finally began to design something theoretically capable of the feat. Most vexing of all was the problem of control – how to conduct a controlled turn when the forces are unbalanced. Without boring you with calculations they explain how they tested different wing shapes and control vanes and then verified them in hundreds of flights in a glider. Finally, in December, 1903, they achieved their milestone: ´´the flight lasted only 12 seconds, but it was nevertheless the first flight in the history of the world in which a machine carrying a man had raised itself by its own power into the air in full flight, had sailed forward without reduction of speed, and had finally landed at a point as high as that from which it started.´´ 1. There´s hardly a day now that an airline incident of some sort or another is not in the news. We´re taking a lot closer look at air travel these days than ever before. Therefore, as regards the psychology of travel, we should take a much closer look at what actually happens on airplanes. So, in The Travel Psychologist Travel Tales Series, that´s exactly what I do. Air-travel-life stories include the full range of the human air travel experience, from preboarding incidents to arrivals; from the cabin to the loo; from the public and private lives of airline personnel as well as passengers - from the pilots, to the stews, to you; from that which makes us laugh to that which makes us cry as well as, unfortunately, to that which creates abject fear and terror in the skies. 1. A crash landing at a remote island airstrip...a scary encounter with an octopus...green ants that defend their tree by attacking anyone who touches it...a mysterious lava-tube cave with hikers´ flashlights floating like fireflies down into its blackness...fruit bats noisily lobbing mangos onto your cabin´s tin roof...the beauties - and dangers - of the crocodile-infested Kakadu National Park...a rugby match in Northern Territory (and why Aussie girls never root for their teams)... In this colorful and remarkable book, written by a colorful and remarkable woman pilot, you´ll find the most enjoyable way to discover Australia - by flying a light airplane to its places of greatest interest while watching the exotic landscape unroll beneath you: vistas of giant paisley patterned earth, caused by underlying salt strata; stunning views of red landscapes, uplifted and contorted during the earth´s primordial boil; the enormously long white beaches of Western Australia, lonesome and edged by brilliant aquas; and the Indian Ocean to the south, marked by hundreds of miles of cliffs (whales breed there.... You could get lucky). You don´t have to be a pilot to enjoy this book. The author also wrote it for nonflyers, in nontechnical terms, to let you see amazing things that pilots experience from their very special perspective. 1. Language: English. This program includes a foreword written and read by Grace Slick, and an afterword written and read by Jack Casady. From the man who made a name for himself as a founding member and lead guitarist of Jefferson Airplane comes a memoir that offers a rare glimpse into the heart and soul of a musical genius - and a vivid journey through the psychedelic era in America. ´´Music is the reward for being alive”, writes Jorma Kaukonen in this candid and emotional account of his life and work. ´´It stirs memory in a singular way that is unmatched.” In a career that has already spanned a half-century - one that has earned him induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, among other honors - Jorma is best known for his legendary bands Jefferson Airplane and the still-touring Hot Tuna. But before he won worldwide recognition he was just a young man with a passion and a dream. Been So Long is the story of how Jorma found his place in the world of music and beyond. The grandson of Finnish and Russian-Jewish immigrants whose formative years were spent abroad with his American-born diplomat father, Jorma channeled his life experiences - from his coming-of-age in Pakistan and the Philippines to his early gigs with Jack Casady in D.C. to his jam sessions in San Francisco with Jerry Garcia, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, and other contemporaries - into his art in unique and revelatory ways. Been So Long charts not only Jorma’s association with the bands that made him famous but goes into never-before-told details about his addiction and recovery, his troubled first marriage and still-thriving second, and more. Interspersed with diary entries, personal correspondence, and song lyrics, this memoir is as unforgettable and inspiring as Jorma’s music itself. This program includes live bonus music.PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, an accompanying PDF will 1. Language: English. Noah Adams´s adventure in search of Wilbur and Orville Wright is a journey that takes him across the country as he follows in the footsteps of the famous brothers in an attempt to know them more deeply, not just as inventors and pilots but as individuals as well. Adams, one of our most distinctive and talented storytellers, traveled thousands of miles and interviewed scores of experts and individuals to piece together his story. He finds a local boat captain to ferry him to Kitty Hawk, along the same route that Wilbur took in 1900, and spends several days talking with descendants of the families who first welcomed the Wright brothers a century ago and helped them conduct their gliding experiments. To experience first-hand the thrill of being in the air, Adams himself goes hang-gliding in the Outer Banks. To understand the aerodynamics of lift and drag and how the famous 1903 plane was constructed, he visits the Virginia pilot and vintage aircraft builder who is creating the world´s most accurate reproduction of the 1903 Wright Flyer. He also travels to France to visit the old racetrack at Le Mans where Wilbur startled the European aviation community with his demonstration flights in 1908. In Adams´s book we encounter the Wright brothers in a way that no writer has introduced them before. Through the lens of his own experiences as well as original reporting, letters, diaries and other primary source material, he helps us understand the talent and intensity of the brothers and their family, including the fascinating, deeply complex, and at times tragic bond between Orville and Katharine, his younger sister. The Flyers is a wonderfully rich narrative that brings an unprecedented spirit of immediacy to one of history´s most dramatic stories. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Noah Adams. At age 19, pilot Dale Black miraculously survived an airplane crash that killed the other two pilots on board. Hovering between life and death for three days, he had a breathtaking experience of heaven. Against all odds and with insurmountable injuries, Capt. Black recovered from his injuries and returned to fly airplanes as a professional pilot, airline pilot instructor, and jet flight examiner. For 40 years he kept the story to himself at the urging of his grandfather to ´´live´´ his experience rather than talk about it. The flight to heaven changed Dale´s life, and now he allows it to be told in hopes of encouraging others with this wondrous experience. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Dale Black.
