There was once a little green airplane named Andrew. Not only is Andrew the Airplane smart, but he´s also great at his job. Nobody could fly like Andrew the Airplane, but now the newer and bigger planes don´t think Andrew is good enough to keep up with them. They tease Andrew and tell him that he´s far too small to be a good plane. They say that he´s too old to fly in the air and deliver packages. The other planes start to get more deliveries than Andrew because they are bigger and can travel longer distances. Unfortunately for Andrew, he´s stored away in the plane hangar while the other planes become more popular. No one remembers that Andrew the Airplane is great in the air and the world moves on. Packages get delivered and poor old Andrew the Airplane is left alone. Well, until your child comes along and encourages him by building his self-esteem and showing Andrew how important and special he really is. One day a very large storm hits and manages to split the runway in half. None of the newer and bigger planes can use the runway because now it´s too small. The nearby town´s electricity has gone out and the people living there need fresh supplies. But with most of the planes being far too large, how can the supplies be delivered using such a small runway? Will Andrew the Airplane be able to prove that he has what it takes to deliver the supplies to the stranded townspeople, or are the big planes right, and is Andrew just far too small to be of any help? 1. In September 2000, a young programmer comes home from a desert festival to learn that his grandfather has died and that he has to return to Thebes - a town which is so isolated that its inhabitants have their own language - in order to clean out the house where his family lived for five generations. While he’s there, he runs into Yesim, a Turkish American woman whom he loved as a child, and begins a romance in which past and present are dangerously confused. At the same time, he remembers San Francisco in the wild years of the internet boom, and mourns the loss of Swan, a madman who may have been the only person to understand what was happening to the city, and to the world. La Farge’s ambitious new work considers large worlds and small ones, love, memory, family, flying machines, dance music, and the end of the world. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Charles Carroll. Only two people were in a position to experience all the events leading up to the first flight of a viable airplane, and here in three short essays they report how it came about. The idea of powered flight was so new that there were not even accepted methods of measuring the forces at play on a machine in-flight. The Wright brothers had to develop their own testing methods and conduct experimentation before they finally began to design something theoretically capable of the feat. Most vexing of all was the problem of control – how to conduct a controlled turn when the forces are unbalanced. Without boring you with calculations they explain how they tested different wing shapes and control vanes and then verified them in hundreds of flights in a glider. Finally, in December, 1903, they achieved their milestone: ´´the flight lasted only 12 seconds, but it was nevertheless the first flight in the history of the world in which a machine carrying a man had raised itself by its own power into the air in full flight, had sailed forward without reduction of speed, and had finally landed at a point as high as that from which it started.´´ 1.
