On a beautiful June weekend in 1967, at the beginning of the Summer of Love, the first and only Monterey International Pop Festival roared forward, capturing a decade’s spirit and ushering in a new era of rock and roll. Monterey featured career-making performances by JIMI HENDRIX, JANIS JOPLIN, and OTIS REDDING, but they were just a few performers in a wildly diverse line up that included SIMON AND GARFUNKEL, THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS, THE WHO, THE BYRDS, HUGH MASEKELA, and the extraordinary RAVI SHANKAR. With his characteristic vrit style—and a camera crew that included the likes of Albert Maysles and Richard Leacock— D. A. PENNEBAKER (Don’t Look Back) captured it all, immortalizing moments that have become legend: Pete Townshend smashing his guitar, Jimi Hendrix burning his, Mama Cass being blown away by Janis Joplin’s performance. The Criterion Collection is proud to present the most comprehensive document of the Monterey International Pop Festival ever produced, featuring the films Monterey Pop, Jimi Plays Monterey, and Shake! Airplane Boys in the Black Woods (1930) is an adventure novel for children by E. J. Craine.Excerpt from the book:"Holy Clover, that fellow would make his fortune in a dairy, all right," exclaimed Bob Caldwell. "His fortune, how do you make that out?" Jim Austin demanded. "I'll bite, let’s have the answer." "He'd do the biting - that one tooth ought to be great to make holes in Swiss cheese!" "If I didn’t need both hands you would get a wallop that would leave you only one tooth, then you could start competition," Austin answered. "Well," he added, "this sure looks as if you will find enough different kinds of vegetation, old Horticulturer, may your tribe increase." "Sure does," replied Bob. "Wonder who dropped that one-toother down in this place." The one-toother was a tall, emaciated, dark-skinned individual whose age was in the neighborhood of two hundred. His lips were thick, his huge mouth was wide open and from the upper jaw was the lone tooth. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Helen Smith. Only two people were in a position to experience all the events leading up to the first flight of a viable airplane, and here in three short essays they report how it came about. The idea of powered flight was so new that there were not even accepted methods of measuring the forces at play on a machine in-flight. The Wright brothers had to develop their own testing methods and conduct experimentation before they finally began to design something theoretically capable of the feat. Most vexing of all was the problem of control – how to conduct a controlled turn when the forces are unbalanced. Without boring you with calculations they explain how they tested different wing shapes and control vanes and then verified them in hundreds of flights in a glider. Finally, in December, 1903, they achieved their milestone: "the flight lasted only 12 seconds, but it was nevertheless the first flight in the history of the world in which a machine carrying a man had raised itself by its own power into the air in full flight, had sailed forward without reduction of speed, and had finally landed at a point as high as that from which it started." 1. This week the The Best of Car Talk, how do Tom and Ray celebrate Valentine’s day? With gifts likely to earn them each a few nights sleeping in the garage! But, in classic, “those who can’t do” fashion, they’re happy to give college student Zoey tips for meeting the cute guy working in her dorm. In matters more technical (yet still wacko!), Ed needs help choosing an engine for the Miata-sized airplane he’s building in his garage; and, Mary just bought a vintage Ford Galaxy sight unseen, and now she's scouting the area rest homes for a mechanic to work on it. Also, on Stump the Chumps, we find out if “Fred” ever confessed to his wife that he hates the Saab she bought him as a surprise gift. All this and more, this week on The Best of Car Talk.
