Build and fly your very own model airplane design. Using clear explanations, you will learn about important design trade-offs and how to choose among them. The latest research and techniques are discussed using easy to understand language. You will discover: The special challenges faced by the smaller models and how to overcome them. How to choose the right material for each part of the airplane. Easy rules for selecting the right power system, gas or electric. When it makes sense to use one of the innovative KFm airfoils. Pros and cons of canard and multi-wing configurations. A step-by-step design process that includes goal setting and flight testing. In-depth discussions of important topics like airfoils and wing design. The sources of air drag and how to minimize their impact. ADVANCE PRAISE ´´This book is a joy to read! The writing style and wit add dimension in a way that is rarely found in today´s reference materials. If someone has considered designing their own airplane and been put off because of complicated formulas, vocabulary and reference style that would bore even an engineer, this will convince them to go ahead and try it. Written with real people in mind and not engineers - and I mean that in a good way. This is a book that will reside along the other favorites on my bookshelf. Carlos really managed to produce a book that will last a long time and become one of the standards for modelers.´´ - Greg Gimlick, Electrics columnist, Model Aviation magazine ´´RCAdvisor´s Model Airplane Design Made Easy is the ultimate model airplane design book for both beginning and experienced modelers.´´ - Richard Kline, Inventor, KFm airfoils ´´RCadvisor´s Model Airplane Design Made Easy is a real contribution to the world´s literature on the subject. It provides an excellent bridge between full scale aviation and aeromodeling, showing the relationship between the two, for better understanding of the differences and similarities which should be applied for good model performance. While thorough in detail, the book is also easily readable so that the information is simple to understand. It is a very good combination of theory and practical application. Nicely illustrated, the book is also full of common sense explanations and references to other sources of information.´´ - John Worth, former President and Executive Director of the AMA ´´Carlos Reyes personably leads the reader through some basic aerodynamics, materials considerations, electric power system planning and a practical application of theory as it is applied to a finished flying model. The background history of various types of aircraft shows the development of aviation and how it relates to the models that we build and fly today, as well as how models have influenced general aviation. It is always exciting to find some ´new to me´ concepts and theories, and there were several in this well-written narrative.´´ - Ken Myers, Editor, Ampeer electric flight newsletter ´´No matter how long you´ve been aeromodelling, or what your interests are in our great hobby, the greatest thrill of all is standing behind a unique model that you´ve designed and built yourself, from a blank sheet of paper - or even a blank CAD file - and preparing to make that first take off. So sit yourself down in a comfy chair, read RCadvisor´s Model Airplane Design Made Easy and set off on aeromodelling´s greatest adventure. Let Carlos Reyes - an aeromodeller of long standing and great talent - take you through the mysteries of how to arrive at the point that every lover of model aircraft should experience.´´ - Dereck Woodward, aero
On September 11, 2001, Lisa Beamer was thrust into the national spotlight after her husband, Todd, became an American hero by preventing terrorist hijackers from almost certainly flying United Flight 93 into the White House or the United States Capitol. Instead, Todd led a group of passengers to resist the hijackers, forcing the plane to crash into a Pennsylvania field. Todd and the other heroes of Flight 93 gave their lives so that untold others would be spared. Nothing could be more heroic. Lisa is now telling that story, and much more. She explores the tragic events of that day, revealing some information never before published. She also looks at the life of her husband, telling how and why he was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice and the reason for her hope, courage, and quiet personal strength. This is Todd and Lisa´s story, but it´s also ours, for all of us who long to have the personal qualities of a real hero. This book shows us what they are and how to develop them. The phrase, ´´Let´s Roll´´ were the last words the GTE Airfone operator heard from Todd before the crash. They have become a rallying cry for all Americans to move ahead, despite pain and suffering, with hope, courage, and strength. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Lisa Helm. Unforgotten Hero tells the captivating life story of Second Lieutenant Jimmy L. Escalle, a US Air Force fighter pilot who became missing in action during the Korean War. Growing up in a small farming town in California´s San Joaquin Valley during the 1930s and 1940s, Jim was a devoted son, a caring older brother, a talented athlete, and a young man of moral character who always put others first. He started high school as the Second World War was at its peak, and graduated during a time of transition within America and around the world. He had always wanted to fly airplanes someday, and with the introduction of jet propulsion during his high school years, he dreamed of becoming a jet pilot. Called to serve his country after the Korean War began, his dream became a reality when he joined the Air Force and eventually got the opportunity to fly the F-86 Sabre, regarded as the most advanced jet fighter of its time. Soon after arriving in Korea he went on his first missions, which were MiG Alley sweeps. However, since Jim was assigned to a fighter-bomber squadron, the majority of his combat missions were air-to-ground. These were the most dangerous missions. In Korea, more pilots had been killed or listed as MIA due to being shot down by ground fire rather than enemy aircraft. For Jim, this fact was realized only five weeks before the armistice was signed. He paid the ultimate price for freedom when he disappeared while on a combat mission over North Korea and was never seen or heard from again. 1. Language: English. Narrator: William Dougan. 14 Days to Alaska:Two Brothers in a 57-Year-Old Airplane Fly the Ultimate Cross Country Flight Training Adventure Troy Hamon
Alan Shepard gripped the abort handle and braced his feet against the capsule floor. Five, four, three...don´t screw up, he muttered. Two, one, zero, liftoff. Alan felt himself rising into the sky. He could scarcely believe it. The boy who grew up with a passion for flying was off on the ultimate flight - to space! Alan Shepard´s boyhood fascination with flight led him from constructing model airplanes in his grandfather´s basement to attaining national hero status in the race to space. Rooted in hard work and education, this pioneer´s dreams of flight came true as he became not only the first American launched into space but, later, one of the privileged few to walk on the moon. When he wasn´t soaring above the clouds, astronaut Alan Shepard used his expertise to benefit others, raising money to fuel the dreams of science students and guiding NASA missions. The achievements of this high flyer - America´s ´´Lindbergh of Space´´ - inspire all who dare to live their dreams. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tim Gregory. Requiem for Battleship Yamato is Yoshida Mitsuru´s story of his own experience as a junior naval officer aboard the fabled Japanese battleship as it set out on a last, desperate sortie in April 1945. Yoshida was on the bridge during Yamato´s fatal encounter with American airplanes, and his eloquent, moving account of that battle makes a singular contribution to the literature of the Pacific war. The book has long been considered a classic in both Japan and the United States. As with most great battle stories, its ultimate concern is less bombs and bullets than human nature, less death than life. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Graeme Malcolm.
