Only two people were in a position to experience all the events leading up to the first flight of a viable airplane, and here in three short essays they report how it came about. The idea of powered flight was so new that there were not even accepted methods of measuring the forces at play on a machine in-flight. The Wright brothers had to develop their own testing methods and conduct experimentation before they finally began to design something theoretically capable of the feat. Most vexing of all was the problem of control - how to conduct a controlled turn when the forces are unbalanced. Without boring you with calculations they explain how they tested different wing shapes and control vanes and then verified them in hundreds of flights in a glider. Finally, in December, 1903, they achieved their milestone: ´´the flight lasted only 12 seconds, but it was nevertheless the first flight in the history of the world in which a machine carrying a man had raised itself by its own power into the air in full flight, had sailed forward without reduction of speed, and had finally landed at a point as high as that from which it started.´´ ungekürzt. In 1956 a plane bearing mysterious cargo takes off from a small airport outside Los Angeles and disappears into a raging storm. Nearly 60 years later, while flying over the Sierra Nevada, retired military assassin turned civilian flight instructor and would-be Buddhist Cordell Logan catches a glint of sunlight on metal and spots what appears to be an aircraft wreckage. His life will never be the same. Logan and his beautiful ex-wife, Savannah, plan a reconciliation in posh Lake Tahoe. But upon landing in the Ruptured Duck, his beloved aging Cessna, Logan agrees to put those plans on hold when he´s asked to help guide a search-and-rescue team to the remote, mountainous crash site. The team finds not only a long-missing airplane, with the mummified remains of its pilot still at the controls, but something much more recent and far more sinister: the body of a young man, shot to death only hours earlier. Someone has beaten the rescuers to the site and will clearly stop at nothing to profit from what the plane was carrying - including kidnapping and threatening to kill Savannah if Logan refuses to help them carry out their getaway plans. With the clock ticking and the love of his life in peril, Logan is drawn into a vexing vortex as personal and potentially deadly as any he´s ever known. Voodoo Ridge is a fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled thrill ride filled with the kind of unexpected twists, full-throttle action, and wry humor that won Freed´s Flat Spin and Fangs Out, the first two installments in the Cordell Logan mystery series, rave reviews and a legion of loyal fans. ungekürzt. It all began when we decided to get an airplane. I looked forward to riding with my husband over the countryside and enjoying the scenery. But one day he dropped the bomb. He told me I would need to learn to fly the plane, because, should something happen to him up there, I would have to put it on the ground. I began waking up at night silently screaming because I felt I was flying out of control up there with no way of getting the plane down. We ordered the Ground School materials, and thus the journey began. I had overcome cancer. I could do this, too. My new song became, ´´I believe I can fly´´. As instruction continued, and the hours added up, I suddenly realized I was a pilot. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Leigh Townes. Learn about the history of Flight with iMindsJNR audio learning series for younger minds. Have you ever wondered how a bird flies, or how a heavy airplane stays in the sky? Flight occurs when an object moves through the atmosphere instead of falling towards the Earth. This object can be an aircraft, a spaceship, a rocket, a balloon, a bird, or an insect. In order for something to fly, it has to be lighter than the air around it or powerful enough to defy gravity, which is the Earth’s pull. When a plane gains a lot of speed, its wings push air underneath and the plane rises. When a bird flaps its wings, it creates lift by pushing air underneath. Perfect to engage, entertain and broaden young thinkers.. iMindsJNR brings knowledge to your MP3 with 5 minute information segments for growing minds. Jillian I grew up wealthy and was given everything my parents wanted me to have. After years of being molded into the perfect daughter, I played a role. I was only what they wanted me to be. My parents controlled everything. My life, my friends, my career, and even the man I was supposed to marry. When I stood in front of the mirror and looked at myself, the person looking back was a total stranger. Leaving my fiancé at the altar on my wedding day was the start of a journey I embarked on in search of the person that I truly was. I would disappear, vanish, and start a new life where, little by little, I would unmold the person everybody thought I was. I would live in a man-free zone for as long as my journey took me. No exceptions. Until I met a man with dark hair, a business suit, smoldering eyes, and a face like a god - Drew Westbrook. Drew I had everything I wanted in life. Money, looks, success, and beautiful women by my side at all times. Some of these women stayed around for a while, and some left quickly. I was all for a relationship as long as she wasn´t looking for a ring or wanting to hear the words ´´I do´´. I liked the way I lived my life, and I was content. Plenty of friends, loving parents, and a successful billion-dollar company were all I needed to feel complete. No exceptions. Until the day a brown-haired, blue-eyed beauty sat down next to me on an airplane, and suddenly everything that mattered to me didn´t seem to matter anymore. She captivated me, and I wanted her. All of her. But her journey didn´t include me, and I was left feeling something I´d never felt before: incomplete. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Veronica Worthington, David Benjamin Bliss. Milliions of people are struggling to find a way out of obesity without knowing they already own the most powerful weight loss device ever made. From day one of this wonderful adventure, he have been jotting down his actions and results that caused the weight to go down and his health to skyrocket. By listening to this book, you will benefit from 35 years of research and reflections. Think of this work as a biography more than scientific and medical facts. After a life of obesity, I now have the competence and credibility (even though I joke about not being qualified in the book) to pass this life-changing information onto you. Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Psychology - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, LMU Munich, language: English, abstract: We want to be happy, but what exactly does this mean? Is happiness an emotion, or a way of life; is it temporary, or constant; is it something that depends on you, or on your surroundings? A specific branch in psychology, positive psychology, has embarked on a journey to find the answers to those and similar questions. Everybody wants to be happy. You, me, your best friend, your family. Even your boss. Happiness is such a lucrative incentive that it motivates people to do the craziest things: swimming with sharks, jumping from airplanes, dieting, training, and even working from 9 to 5 for their entire life. Since happiness plays such an important part in our life, we ought to know what it is and where we can easily find it, right? Wrong! This is a challenging task, resulting in years of wrong decisions and frustrating activities. You set yourself a goal to become a lawyer and earn a lot of money. You invest hundreds of hours into studying and practice, spend thousands of dollars on education until you finally get into court and realize that this isnt what you wanted at all. The problem is that we live in a society which is lacking introspection and self-knowledge. In most cases, our parents, teachers and friends tell us what is right for us. They fool us into thinking that we have to strive for certain things in order to be happy. Because we never question authority and we comply gently with societal pressure, we end up with a major depression at the age of 30. So the next time you find yourself doing things other people have told you to do, stop and think for a second if this is really what you want to do.
