Summary of Grunt by Mary Roach | Includes Analysis Preview: Mary Roach´s Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans Aat War examines technological and medical research in the military. Each chapter focuses on a different topic - for example, diarrhea among soldiers - and then presents historical background, interviews with scientists and affected military personnel, and possible solutions to the problem. Military research in both news accounts and films is usually presented as a matter of technology and combat equipment, such as faster airplanes, better bombs, and deadlier weapons. Much military research, however, is devoted to finding ways to protect soldiers or to help them cope in the aftermath of injury. For instance, researchers work constantly to develop clothing fabrics that will keep soldiers cool while still providing camouflage - a difficult task because the black in camouflage absorbs heat. Doctors and surgeons constantly develop new ways to address injuries from bombs and gunshots. They have made advances in reconstructive genital surgery and even some strides towards successful penis transplants.... In the middle of August 1944, the Soviet Red Army crossed the eastern border of Romania and threatened the entire position of the Axis in the Balkans. On August 23, Romania´s King Michael summoned the head of the government to the royal palace and asked him to break with the Germans and negotiate surrender terms with the Soviet Union. Shortly thereafter, Michael took Romania out of the war and issued an ultimatum that the German forces leave the country within three days. The German commander responded immediately by bombing the royal palace, government offices, and other targets in Bucharest. Amid this military and political chaos, the guards at the prisoner-of-war camps abandoned their posts, and the question of what was the best course for the Allied prisoners was discussed at great length by the prisoners themselves. Hanging in the balance were the lives of more than 1200 Allied airmen who had crashed or bailed out over Romania and were now trapped in the midst of a war hundreds of miles from friendly territory. Dire action was needed to settle the dire situation. The senior American airman came up with a plan to be flown to Italy aboard a Romanian Air Force airplane, and his arrival there triggered one of history´s great and novel mass evacuations. The late American fighter ace Robert J. Goebel wrote the definitive account of Operation Reunion, and it is proudly presented here. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Gary Goebel. An important look at how America has won its wars in the past and how it can continue winning in the future. Is there a recipe for military success? In No Substitute for Victory, author David Rigby grapples with this issue and determines that, in the case of the United States, there are a number of different strategies that have brought victory in battle to American forces over the years. In a clear, energetic prose, Rigby explains how the dropping of chocolate bars from airplanes over Berlin turned out to be one of the most successful applications of the Cold War strategy of containment. He argues, too, that far from being a radical change in policy by a desperate President Lincoln, the Emancipation Proclamation was in fact an essential part of Lincoln´s plan to reunite the nation. While the focus in No Substitute for Victory is on military maneuvers that have been successful, Rigby brilliantly uses the Vietnam War as a touchstone for comparison purposes on how not to fight a war. While the writing of military strategy is a crowded field, Rigby´s approach is unique in that he draws examples from conflicts throughout American history, from the Revolution up through the modern day. Rigby´s ability to find similarities in, and to draw conclusions from, the successes attained by American forces in battles as seemingly dissimilar as Gettysburg and Midway makes No Substitute for Victory essential reading for anyone interested in the riveting history of our nation´s military. How do you capture the fastest airplane in the world without anyone finding out? Concealed deep within China´s inland borders is one of the most secret airplanes ever flown, known as Devil Dragon. She´s sleek, unbelievably fast, and mysterious - her test pilots have one mission in mind: make her test flights successful for operational use as soon as possible. Or sooner. Wilson shot a glance over his right shoulder at San Ramon. In addition to the blinking of anti-aircraft artillery guns, he could see clouds of smoke on the field from the numerous Slash hits. Breathing through his mouth, he concentrated on getting fast and maintaining a slight climb. Bright fireballs of AAA shot by him in groups of three and four, orderly trails from low to high. His body was tense, ready for impact. He felt and heard the thud behind, on his right. Terrified, he twisted his body in the ejection seat to see what he could, pushing his helmet and goggles with his left hand to see over his wing. Through the narrow field of view of the goggles, he sensed flickering behind him. He then felt the airplane yaw right. Both were signs he had lost thrust on the right side. Sonofabitch! 1.
