William Faulkner was the greatest American novelist of the twentieth century, yet he lived a life marked by a pervasive sense of failure. Throughout his career, he remained haunted by his inability to master a series of personal and professional challenges: his less-than-heroic military career; the loss of his brother in an airplane crash; a disappointing stint as a Hollywood screenwriter; and a destructive bout with alcoholism. In this imaginative biography, Philip Weinstein--a leading authority on the great novelist--targets Faulkner´s embattled sense of self as central to both his life and his work. Weinstein shows how Faulkner´s troubled interactions with time, place, and history--with antebellum practices and racial division--take on their fullest meanings in his fiction. Exploring the resonance of his own unpreparedness, Faulkner invented a singular language that captured human consciousness under stress as never before. Becoming Faulkner joins Faulkner´s life and art in a bold new way, giving readers a full vantage from which to better understand this twentieth-century literary genius. Weinstein shows how Faulkner´s troubled interactions with time, place, and history--with antebellum practices and southern heritage--form a pattern that played out over the course of his entire life. At the same time, these incidents take on their fullest meanings in his fiction. It was in meditating on his failures, his own unreadiness, Weinstein argues, that Faulkner came up with his singular language, one that captured human consciousness under stress as never before. His fruitless striving catapulted American literature to a new level of sophistication. Narrating the events that comprised Faulkner´s life, biographers have long struggled to depict his personal complexity, the paradoxes that shaped his decisions and dogged his relationships. But without a consideration of the writing as well, the troubles in the life fail to reveal their deeper resonance. By skillfully analyzing the work while tracing the events, Weinstein achieves a full portrait, revealing struggles that animate his life and shadows that complicate his work. Becoming Faulkner thus conjoins Faulkner´s life and art in a bold new way, giving readers a full vantage from which to better understand this twentieth-century literary genius.
When everything you count on for your existence fails, could you survive? Within days of a series of monster solar storms slamming into earth, electrical grids fail and everything in the northern hemisphere with a computer chip ceases functioning. Electricity cant be completely restored for at least a decade, and the result that everything modern life depends on to function is gone. There is no way to pump gas or water. Cell towers are wiped out, along with satellites. Airplanes and most vehicles will not operate. Communication is practically impossible. People cannot access life-saving prescription drugs or food. Police, fire services, and the military are overwhelmed, and hospitals cant cope. Theres no one to come to the rescue, and as mass panic ensues, people begin dying. Fear and violence escalate until society collapses. An unlikely hero emerges. Chaco is a well-educated freedom fighter on a death list in El Salvador. Having fled to the United States, he is in hiding by working for a wealthy couple as their handyman and gardener. Following the disaster, he reveals his true identity, and convinces his employers and their neighbors to follow him over brutal mountain passes to a self-sufficient commune nearly 800 miles away. But only a few will survive. Readers reviews: So exciting couldnt put down! Great adventure into the potential unknown world of the future. Very entertaining read! The first book to use the unexpected discoveries of neuroscience to help us make the best decisions Since Plato, philosophers have described the decision-making process as either rational or emotional: we carefully deliberate, or we ´´blink´´ and go with our gut. But as scientists break open the mind´s black box with the latest tools of neuroscience, they´re discovering that this is not how the mind works. Our best decisions are a finely tuned blend of both feeling and reason - and the precise mix depends on the situation. When buying a house, for example, it´s best to let our unconscious mull over the many variables. But when we´re picking a stock, intuition often leads us astray. The trick is to determine when to use the different parts of the brain, and to do this, we need to think harder (and smarter) about how we think. Jonah Lehrer arms us with the tools we need, drawing on cutting-edge research as well as the real-world experiences of a wide range of ´´deciders´´ - from airplane pilots and hedge fund investors to serial killers and poker players. Lehrer shows how people are taking advantage of the new science to make better television shows, win more football games, and improve military intelligence. His goal is to answer two questions that are of interest to just about anyone, from CEOs to firefighters: How does the human mind make decisions? And how can we make those decisions better?
Project Report from the year 2012 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: A, DeVry University, course: ECET 494, language: English, abstract: The objective of this project is to design, build, and operate a GPS-Guided Autopilot system for Radio Controlled Aircraft. This product will have to be small, lightweight, aerodynamic, and modular. It will only have to rely on 1 channel input from the aircraft receiver for the RC/Autopilot switching function. It will have to be able to fly a predetermined route while having the ability for the consumer to override the autopilot feature if desired by using their remote control. Our RC aircraft autopilot system will be interfaced with a computer in order to program the way-points that will make up the flight plan. All of these objectives are critical in order to have a functional RC aircraft autopilot system. Our time frame for completion of this project is 32 weeks and our target for total cost for the build is $500. The product that we are proposing is a GPS-Guided Autopilot System designed for radio-controlled aircraft. This project is a modular RC/Autopilot Aircraft System that will be designed for small, inexpensive, and basic radio controlled unmanned aerial vehicles. Although our target market will be RC hobbyists that are interested in flying their airplanes autonomously, our system will also have the potential to expand to larger markets such as hobbyists flying helicopters as well as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles used in the military. There will be three phases to this project, Phase (1) is our goal and is dedicated as the Autopilot function once the aircraft has reached altitude. Phase (2) is the addition of Autopilot landing, and Phase (3) is the addition of Autopilot takeoff. Phases (2) and (3) are left as optional and will be completed if and only if the team has enough time before the end of the series of Senior Project courses. The project can be broken down into three basic modules to perform these tasks. These modules are the Sensing module, the Receiver/Processor module, and a flight Control module. The combination of these three modules will be assembled to form the autopilot function. The Sensing module will consist of a GPS antenna and a signal processor along with a 2-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis accelerometer. The GPS signal from satellites will be processed into information that will be used by the receiver/processor module to send flight path corrections to the flight control module to keep the aircraft on the programmed path. The flight controls affected by the GPS signals will be the engine speed and the rudder. * Self-Starter * Served ACTIVE US ARMY 1987 - 1996 honorably and with distinction * War Veteran 1991 Persian Gulf War * Found DOS/Windows in 1992 and purchased my first Tandy Computer * Attended Austin Peay State University for a short time while serving-Focus was Business * Attended Jefferson Community College, Louisville, KY-Major Computer Information Systems and Computer Programming. * Transferred all credits years later in 2009 to the University of DeVry where I received a B.S.
