In-depth discussions of important topics like airfoils and wing design. The sources of air drag and how to minimize their impact. ADVANCE PRAISE ´´This book is a joy to read! The writing style and wit add dimension in a way that is rarely found in today´s reference materials. If someone has considered designing their own airplane and been put off because of complicated formulas, vocabulary and reference style that would bore even an engineer, this will convince them to go ahead and try it. Written with real people in mind and not engineers - and I mean that in a good way. This is a book that will reside along the other favorites on my bookshelf. Carlos really managed to produce a book that will last a long time and become one of the standards for modelers.´´ - Greg Gimlick, Electrics columnist, Model Aviation magazine ´´RCAdvisor´s Model Airplane Design Made Easy is the ultimate model airplane design book for both beginning and experienced modelers.´´ - Richard Kline, Inventor, KFm airfoils ´´RCadvisor´s Model Airplane Design Made Easy is a real contribution to the world´s literature on the subject. It provides an excellent bridge between full scale aviation and aeromodeling, showing the relationship between the two, for better understanding of the differences and similarities which should be applied for good model performance. While thorough in detail, the book is also easily readable so that the information is simple to understand. It is a very good combination of theory and practical application. Nicely illustrated, the book is also full of common sense explanations and references to other sources of information.´´ - John Worth, former President and Executive Director of the AMA ´´Carlos Reyes personably leads the reader through some basic aerodynamics, materials considerations, electric power system planning and a practical application of theory as it is applied to a finished flying model. The background history of various types of aircraft shows the development of aviation and how it relates to the models that we build and fly today, as well as how models have influenced general aviation. It is always exciting to find some ´new to me´ concepts and theories, and there were several in this well-written narrative.´´ - Ken Myers, Editor, Ampeer electric flight newsletter ´´No matter how long you´ve been aeromodelling, or what your interests are in our great hobby, the greatest thrill of all is standing behind a unique model that you´ve designed and built yourself, from a blank sheet of paper - or even a blank CAD file - and preparing to make that first take off. So sit yourself down in a comfy chair, read RCadvisor´s Model Airplane Design Made Easy and set off on aeromodelling´s greatest adventure. Let Carlos Reyes - an aeromodeller of long standing and great talent - take you through the mysteries of how to arrive at the point that every lover of model aircraft should experience.´´ - Dereck Woodward, aero
Only two people were in a position to experience all the events leading up to the first flight of a viable airplane, and here in three short essays they report how it came about. The idea of powered flight was so new that there were not even accepted methods of measuring the forces at play on a machine in-flight. The Wright brothers had to develop their own testing methods and conduct experimentation before they finally began to design something theoretically capable of the feat. Most vexing of all was the problem of control – how to conduct a controlled turn when the forces are unbalanced. Without boring you with calculations they explain how they tested different wing shapes and control vanes and then verified them in hundreds of flights in a glider. Finally, in December, 1903, they achieved their milestone: ´´the flight lasted only 12 seconds, but it was nevertheless the first flight in the history of the world in which a machine carrying a man had raised itself by its own power into the air in full flight, had sailed forward without reduction of speed, and had finally landed at a point as high as that from which it started.´´ 1. There´s hardly a day now that an airline incident of some sort or another is not in the news. We´re taking a lot closer look at air travel these days than ever before. Therefore, as regards the psychology of travel, we should take a much closer look at what actually happens on airplanes. So, in The Travel Psychologist Travel Tales Series, that´s exactly what I do. Air-travel-life stories include the full range of the human air travel experience, from preboarding incidents to arrivals; from the cabin to the loo; from the public and private lives of airline personnel as well as passengers - from the pilots, to the stews, to you; from that which makes us laugh to that which makes us cry as well as, unfortunately, to that which creates abject fear and terror in the skies. 1. A crash landing at a remote island airstrip...a scary encounter with an octopus...green ants that defend their tree by attacking anyone who touches it...a mysterious lava-tube cave with hikers´ flashlights floating like fireflies down into its blackness...fruit bats noisily lobbing mangos onto your cabin´s tin roof...the beauties - and dangers - of the crocodile-infested Kakadu National Park...a rugby match in Northern Territory (and why Aussie girls never root for their teams)... In this colorful and remarkable book, written by a colorful and remarkable woman pilot, you´ll find the most enjoyable way to discover Australia - by flying a light airplane to its places of greatest interest while watching the exotic landscape unroll beneath you: vistas of giant paisley patterned earth, caused by underlying salt strata; stunning views of red landscapes, uplifted and contorted during the earth´s primordial boil; the enormously long white beaches of Western Australia, lonesome and edged by brilliant aquas; and the Indian Ocean to the south, marked by hundreds of miles of cliffs (whales breed there.... You could get lucky). You don´t have to be a pilot to enjoy this book. The author also wrote it for nonflyers, in nontechnical terms, to let you see amazing things that pilots experience from their very special perspective. 1. Language: English. Noah Adams´s adventure in search of Wilbur and Orville Wright is a journey that takes him across the country as he follows in the footsteps of the famous brothers in an attempt to know them more deeply, not just as inventors and pilots but as individuals as well. Adams, one of our most distinctive and talented storytellers, traveled thousands of miles and interviewed scores of experts and individuals to piece together his story. He finds a local boat captain to ferry him to Kitty Hawk, along the same route that Wilbur took in 1900, and spends several days talking with descendants of the families who first welcomed the Wright brothers a century ago and helped them conduct their gliding experiments. To experience first-hand the thrill of being in the air, Adams himself goes hang-gliding in the Outer Banks. To understand the aerodynamics of lift and drag and how the famous 1903 plane was constructed, he visits the Virginia pilot and vintage aircraft builder who is creating the world´s most accurate reproduction of the 1903 Wright Flyer. He also travels to France to visit the old racetrack at Le Mans where Wilbur startled the European aviation community with his demonstration flights in 1908. In Adams´s book we encounter the Wright brothers in a way that no writer has introduced them before. Through the lens of his own experiences as well as original reporting, letters, diaries and other primary source material, he helps us understand the talent and intensity of the brothers and their family, including the fascinating, deeply complex, and at times tragic bond between Orville and Katharine, his younger sister. The Flyers is a wonderfully rich narrative that brings an unprecedented spirit of immediacy to one of history´s most dramatic stories. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Noah Adams. At age 19, pilot Dale Black miraculously survived an airplane crash that killed the other two pilots on board. Hovering between life and death for three days, he had a breathtaking experience of heaven. Against all odds and with insurmountable injuries, Capt. Black recovered from his injuries and returned to fly airplanes as a professional pilot, airline pilot instructor, and jet flight examiner. For 40 years he kept the story to himself at the urging of his grandfather to ´´live´´ his experience rather than talk about it. The flight to heaven changed Dale´s life, and now he allows it to be told in hopes of encouraging others with this wondrous experience. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Dale Black.
